Screen-Printing Materials
Choose an item to embellish: look around the house for fabric or leather items your dad uses often, or consider shopping around for something neutral and relatively inexpensive, such as:
- Tie
- T-shirt, sweatshirt or baseball cap
- Blanket
- Briefcase
- Book cover
- Day planner or notebook
- Grilling apron
- Mouse pad
- Fabric bookmark
In addition to your screen-printing item, you will need:
- Pen
- Paper
- Newspaper
- Fabric marker (optional)
- Embroidery hoop
- Mesh fabric, large enough to fit the hoop
- Medium-size paintbrush
- Decoupage glue
- Sponge brush, or other fat-bristled brush
- Screen-printing ink, color(s) of your choice

How to Screen-Print
- Line your work area with newspaper. Use a pen to draw the design of your choice on a piece of paper.
- Stretch the mesh fabric over your embroidery hoop until very taut.
- Lay the embroidery hoop over your drawing. Use a pen or fabric marker to trace the drawing onto the mesh fabric.
- With your paintbrush, apply a thick layer of the decoupage glue on the area outside your drawing to prevent the ink from bleeding beyond the design. Also cover any details within your image that you do not want colored in with ink. Let dry completely.
- Once dry, lay the embroidery hoop design-side-up on your item to be printed. Use the sponge brush (or other fat-bristled brush) to stipple the ink over the non-glued areas, careful not to shift the hoop.
- Peel off the hoop and let your customized item dry completely.
Tip: Stippling is a short, fast dotting motion, similar to stenciling.
Tip: You can re-use your homemade screen-printing hoop! Just wash with cool water, gently scrubbing off the ink and glue with your fingertips.
