Step-by-Step Guide to Scale and Proportion
If you’ve ever been in a room and felt like something wasn’t right about the décor, chances are it wasn’t the style. It may have been that the scale and proportion of the space was off, which in turn can make a room feel unbalanced. Try taking a look at each of your rooms with these basic definitions and step-by-step tips in mind.
Scale: How items in a room relate to the size of the room.
Proportion: How items in a room relate to each other.
Step One: Ask Basic Questions
- Are there too many accents, art pieces, furniture etc. that are the same size and fighting for attention?
- Is there enough variation in height or is everything at the same level?
- What items in the room can be rearranged to create a better sense of balance and harmony?
- How can color, accents and artwork be used better to fit and fill space more naturally?
Step Two: Make Changes
- Arrange the room to be based around a focal point, like a fireplace or an anchor, like a large piece of furniture.
- Make sure items in the room relate well to each other. For example, don't hang one small picture over a large couch or put a huge lamp on top of a small table.
- You can make a room feel less monotonous by varying the height of items in the room. The easiest way to do this is with artwork, but you should also be conscious not to have all furniture and lamps at the same level.
- Keep the eye moving around the space. You can do this with both color and placement of items. For example, a blue chair can lead into a blue accented lampshade, that leads into a blue patterned vase on a bookshelf and so on.
Step Three: Take a Final Step Back
- Be conscious of overcrowding once you've rearranged. By taking a few things out, you may have better movement around the space and create breathing room between various items.
- If something still feels off, consider colour carefully. Even if your colours are coordinated they may be unbalanced. If there's too much light colour on one side and too much dark on the other, the room can feel too heavy or weighted to one area.
Getting scale and proportion right in your rooms takes practice. Keep your eyes open and don't get discouraged! Before long you'll be a pro at finding the perfect place for anything and everything in your home.
